GATE 2024 exam preparation tips

Are you looking for how to prepare for the GATE 2024 examination? You must follow and apply the common experience of your seniors and teachers to get an idea about what should and what should not prepare for GATE.

Normally students believe that if they attempt all the questions, they might get a maximum score but they should keep in mind that the GATE exam keeps negative marking for each wrong answer and deducts about 33.33 % of the total marks allotted to that question to which you gave the wrong answer. Follow the GATE tips and get a good score.

  • Before starting anything about GATE, First, understand what is GATE? Know its importance, date, eligibility, and recent changes.  (Best book to prepare for GATE 2024)
  • First, start your preparation right from the day you want to prepare for it. The beginning is half success. If you wait for some good day to start, that good day will never come and ultimately you will lose/waste your time unnecessarily.
  •  Collect the GATE 2024 Syllabus copy and find the subjects asked during the examination
  •  Divide the subjects based on past questions and mark the importance of each subject.
  •  Normally GATE paper consists of those questions that are related to specialization in M. Tech and M.E.
  •  When you start your preparation, just concentrate on the concept, not on theory derivation.
  •  Have previous year's questions papers handy to know which type of questions can be asked in the exam
  •  Concentrate on the topics that you skipped or do not know in the syllabus during your graduation. This is the right time to prepare for it. Normally the exam will contain those questions that you do not know!!!
  •  Do not re-read the topics that you already know. this will waste your time.
  •  Make a separate note of equations with 2 marks and grasp it along with its concepts.
  • Take participation in a mock test for the GATE examination which can be available online.
  • Do not waste time on unnecessary activities like gossip, TV, or internet surfing. Because the time you are wasting will never come back and you need to wait for another year for the same examination.  So, understand well this saying, "Time and Tide wait for none"

    1. Yes, Dear you can apply for GATE and start preparing for it. Who says that GATE is for brilliant students? GATE is a chance for you to polish your knowledge of graduation and use that knowledge for masters and job too. You can join this blog and ask me for any doubt.

  2. My B.E. aggregate is 59.87%.
Should i apply to GATE? Will my graduation score will affect my M tech campus selection?

    1. Why not? You can sure apply. I know student who cracked GATE with self confidence and got above 99 percentile. You are capable of anything you undertake. GATE is just a pre-planned fight. There is a great hype about GATE that, GATE is for brilliant students. No it is a chance for any student to prove his/her capabilities in engineering

Sure you can appear for GATE. Your graduation percentage just make little difference because 10-20% companies requires 60% aggregate not all. So, do not bother about those 10-20% companies but think about remaining companies in which you can apply.

If you are determined to appear for GATE, do not wait for any other reason. There is no best time to start anything. You can join this blog by clicking on 'Join this site' button. Feel free to ask me. post your reply here.

  5. Actually it depends on qualifying degree percentage and as per new rules, candidate must have minimum 6.5 CGPA(on 10 point scale) for OPEN category. What is your degree percentage shown in degree? First class? or other?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My degree percentage shown on the certificate is 62% FIRST class...
IIT Madras has given eligibility criteria for GATE student is just BE graduate with valid GATE score..percentage criteria is not mentioned.that is only for sponsored candidates..
while IIT Bombay has mentioned FIRST class or 60%..so now m confused whether i am applicable or not?

      Delete
    2. IIT Bombay requires what? Final year percentage as first class or Aggregate 60%? Please clarify it. You just apply for it as you have 62% in final year. Normally degree % is counted. I think Industrial jobs require aggregate not academics. But we do not know when they change eligibility criteria. Apply for IIT Bombay and see what happens? First get good (more than 98 percentile) and then worry about everything else. And it is quite easy to get this high percentile.

    3. @paresh- IIT B generally take marks as on ur Degree certificate . i want to mention u 1 thing here is IF YOU HAVE AIR 600 (open) N ABOVE U DEFINETLY GET ADMISSION IN IITS or NITS. :)

  6. If your aggregate is less than 60% for all sem. marks, you are not eligible for admission in NIT or IIT. You need to select other state colleges.

    1. Yes, Dipak you can start preparation from this time. Do not waste time in searching for good time. I think self study is best from every respect, money, time and others too. You just download previous GATE papers and look for subject wise important topics asked in each GATE year. Start from those you do not know and skip those you already know. This will save your time. Take help from others who already succeed in the GATE. You can seek guidance from me by joining this site. Click on 'Join this site' in right and enter you email id to get updates from this site. 8. Hi Sir,

I am currently working in a software company for two years, I would love to move to Central government job, Do most companies accept GATE score? What rank should i get to get in those companies. Also is it possible for me to look for core jobs in private companies. Please advice.

    1. It is nice that you want to move to Core companies of central government. There are few companies like IOCL, BHEL, NTPC, ONGC etc, which require high GATE score or percentile normally well above 90. You can easily crack the GATE through systematic preparation. I never joined GATE classes. You need to be determined for GATE exam seriously otherwise all year will be same as previous. You need to wait for next year to perform better.

I do not know from which engineering background you belonging. Always core companies are challenging for any engineer. Software companies are suitable for those having software background like IT, Computer engineering etc. For other branches one should always look for core.

There is no problem in getting placed in private core companies. You need to start from anywhere. Once you start from low level, you can switch to high level companies later on by experience in low level companies, Initially experience and knowledge matters not money.

    1. Normally I know about from where to start in Mechanical Engineering as I belong from Mechanical Engineering background. follow this,
      1. Collect and print CS syllabus from internet or you can have if you already registered for the GATE 2013.
      2. Now refer previous year question papers of your branch.
      3. Critically look at each question paper of previous year paper in terms of syllabus of current year and subject. Mark that topic as important and you will come to know which topic is important and which is not.
      4. At the end, you will know which subject is important for GATE of your branch.
      5. Start looking at those topic which are unknown to you, not that you already know.
      6. Note important points/equations/concepts in separate note book so that one day before GATE exam, you can refer very quickly.
      7. Try to learn by heart(not by mugging and also not for just exam
      Best of luck.

    1. Actually it is totally dependent on the requirements of the companies. Normally it is updated every year as no GATE paper is as similar as previous one. There may be change in it. So just target high to hit the mark but never choose low target. If one could get more than 45 marks, he/she can definitely selected for interview.

    1. The first subjects you can start are same subjects that is in current syllabus of your final year. i.e. optimization techniques, manufacturing, refrigeration etc. but you do not need to start it again. Just concentrate on these subjects more while you prepare for your routine semester exam. This will save your time to prepare for GATE. Just emphasize more on content of these subjects given in GATE syllabus.

There is no subject which you can start first!! Just try to see which subjects are favorites to you. Just skip for while and start with other subjects. Just re-read this post again. You will get idea.

    1. Normally, Big companies prefer higher percentage(aggregate) in BE but some companies also prefer some what lower cut off like more than 50%. They normally rate performance in interview, not how did you performed in your graduation. You just need to concentrate more on GATE because, GATE is only way that you can be eligible to get admission into masters as well as some of the companies prefer GATE qualified candidates rather than on percentage on BE. You just brush up the fundamentals/basic concepts. Everything will be fine once you clear GATE will good score. Best of luck.

  18. Hello sir,
I am Krunal Shah. I have completed B.Tech from the Mechanical discipline with aggregate 64%. So my question is that, There are to many persons whom I met told me that minimum one year preparation is needed for the GATE, I have not started the preparation of GATE, only 4 months are remaining. So can I crack the GATE in this minimum time of period?

And How to do preparation in this minimum kind of time period?

Please help me If you can.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do not listen from others just listen from the person who has experience of the same. I gave GATE Mechanical in 2006 when I was in final year and I got over 90 percentile without any serious preparation! But I will not encourage others to do so, Minimum 3 month serious preparation is necessary for good score. Only thing you need to follow is just concentrate more on basics. GATE is all about checking your basic concepts because GATE is exam to check whether you are eligible for doing research in M. Tech or not. Research can only be done if you have sound basic concepts. So, Start from today. you are having 4 months and it is more than sufficient.

Second thing, Do not leave the chance to give GATE this year. By chance if you will not perform well, atleast you can have experience of GATE and this will help in future too.

      Just DO it.

    1. I think you want information regarding specialization in mechanical engineering right? Electives are the subject which are offered by department to study various field subjects, It is not necessary to have from same branch, it may be from other department or branch. To get into IIT Madras, At least you should got more than 99 percentile or more than 60 score to get into IIT. This may vary from time to time.

    2. There are various specializations in M. Tech. Major specializations are Thermal Engineering, Design and Manufacturing. It totally depend on the college and their professors which specialization they are offering.

    1. You admission to any college offering master degree is totally dependent on your score, If you manage to get more than 95% or remain in top 5% of the students in GATE during 2013, almost most of the colleges will welcome you. To remain in top 5% student or getting high score, you need systematic preparation. Start it today.

Forget the past and concentrate more on present so that your future will never suffer. You will get one chance every year so, think seriously about GATE.

    3. Hi. Punit. You need more than 45 marks in GATE to be eligible for admission into NITs or other deemed universities. Normally here at SVNIT, NIT-Surat, cut off is normally more than 45 means lowest marks are 45. You need to score more than that it. You can even start preparing for it from now onwards. Prepare your own notes as I do while I was preparing for GATE in 2006. Have a look at those materials-Strength of material and Study material for Fluid Mechanics

  25. Hello Subhajit, You need to score more than 700 out of 1000 in GATE 2013 as previous cut off was 702 in IIT Bombay. Normally top IITs have near about same cut off. You need to target beyond 702 or you need to get more than 60 marks out of 100 marks in GATE 2013.
You will get admission mostly based on score only. Interview will be simple and will be just formality. No need to worry. Though I am from NIT Surat but being a PhD student and Lecturer, I am in contact with some IITans. So, just aim high to hit high.

    1. Hello King, GPA is classified into two group, 1. SGPA which shows performance in particular that semester only but 2. CGPA means Cumulative GPA which means all semesters including first year are considered. At the end of B. Tech you will get CGPA including all your semester, In other words, you will get aggregate percentage directly.

    1. You raised a nice question!! Why? Normally to have faster GATE preparation, you need to concentrate more on important topics not each and every topics. I already mentioned in the above post @ GATE Preparation tips, that you should first see that which topics are frequently asked. You can skip those which are not in previous year question papers. GATE examination is for checking your engineering aptitude to check whether you will be able to do research in thermal, design or manufacturing (specialization in M.Tech). So, most GATE paper will emphasize more on thermal. You can analyse each GATE paper.

    1. If you have trust in yourself then, do not go to GATE coaching. I am not in opposition to coaching centres but coaching will help you if you have very less time to prepare for GATE but you have more time as you want to appear for GATE 2014. If you are already a graduate, You can identify which are the topics that are asked in previous papers and you do not know it because of different syllabus or might be not very clear. First stick to your timetable and prepare those which you do not know really. Do not waste time in preparing those which you are confident with them.
Prepare with separate notes for each subject with basic concepts and equations type notes.
Consult seniors if you have any doubts. I have put everything in this article written above. Study from book separately also read each comments above to get answer for various questions.
      Best of luck.

    1. You can be eligible for GATE when you will be in final year. It is better that you start preparation from any time you decide to give.

Registration normally done in September each year and GATE exam-offline is held in second Sunday of each year.

GATE score is valid for maximum 2 years. You can take admission or use that score for your purpose.

    3. To be eligible for GATE, one need to have complete bachelor degree. If you are in final year, you need to submit application with your principal's signature..

In industry, they actually do not prefer GATE but at the time of any interview, if you are GATE qualified, you will get high credits compared to those without GATE score card, Nowadays many Govt. or PSU companies prefer GATE as interview requirements.

So, it is always preferable to appear for GATE if you want to test yourself, where you stands!!!!!!!!

    1. Hello Asus,
During the M. Tech admission your GATE Score and marks are important. Also your B.E percentage plays important role in getting admission if they set BE % as admission criteria.

Try to concentrate more on subject of Mechanical or the stream you are in. GA will be cleared if you do not prepare it all but if you do not prepare subject or syllabus of GATE, no one will help you. Common sense will help in GA questions during GATE. So, balance both the things.

    1. I think there is no short cut to success in GATE. If you are good in basic concepts then nothing will stop you. You could prepare Heat transfer, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Maths. These are important subjects in GATE. So, try to grasp basic concepts only. You are having almost 60 days before GATE.
If you want to prepare for only 6 subjects, just go for 10 days for each subject. Note down each basic equation that is easy to solve or of 2 marks weightage. You can refer GATE old papers. Just prepare seperate notebook for each subject. At end of you 9 days for each subject, keep last day i.e. 10th day a revision period.

    1. If HANDA book covers complete syllabus then there is no issue. The common book just gives you overview of what you should read. Now, if you are having this book, there is no issue with it. Just remember, Do not go in fast way to read all the matters given in book but read by chewing means what you read should be well understood. If you finish the book in 15 days, there is no meaning but if you read with heart, you will see there is much more to think in every line of syllabus and its content. GATE is all about that.
You can remember equation of 2 marks but what about basic concepts? Concepts is always asked in GATE in any form. You should learn by heart.

Read what you do not know. Just skip what you know VERY WELL. Do not waste time in reading unnecessary subjects. Read important subjects like Heat transfer, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Maths and machine design.

    2. HANDA do covers all topics but it doesn't explain them very well plus some topics are missing from that book.So can you suggest me a good book which is appropaite for GATE

    1. If you are having B E degree, no one can stop you to apply for GATE. You can now apply for the GATE next year i.e. 2014

Do not bother about past, just make your future bright by efforts in present.

  42. Sir I am 2010 pass out (Technically) with 63%(2nd division) marks but in more than 4 years bcoz I didnt pass one subject in the final sem & so my Degree was extended. My degree read 2011-12 pass out. So will it make any difference in the GATE especially in the interviews in PSU's & IIT's. And how much minimum mark will secure a place in NIT/IIT & how much minimum mark is required for recruiting PSU's.

    1. GATE has nothing to do with the duration of your degree. In case of NIT and IIT admission even this will not make any difference because most of the IIT and NIT give adimission without interview. If they interview, you just admit the real reason. Do not give useless reason. Answer should be clear and truth-worthy. In PSU, they recruit based on GATE and interview. So, do not feel ashamed of that you have backlogs. It will not make any difference. Just be what you are!

    1. Yes, of course you can prepare it and give GATE in next February. You have more than 40 days. So prepare atleast 8 important subjects. Just concentrate on important topics (from Old GATE papers)and note important equations.

Believe in yourself. You will become what you think you are.

    1. You can study following important subjects for GATE Mechanical.

      1. Engineering thermodynamics
      2. Fluid Mechanics
      3. Solid Mechanics
      4. Heat and mass transfer
      5. Machine design
      6. Refrigeration and air conditioning
      7. Theory of machines
      8. Manufacturing technology.

All above subjects are basis for research in post graduation and most of the GATE papers involves majority of questions from above subject only. You can verify by viewing old GATE papers.

  53. Respected sir,
Sir suppose i score 96 % in first gate exam & i want to appeared second exam & then i score less than 96% then i take admission by using my first gate score it is possible & sir my gate score is valid for iit for 2 years also sir plaese help me

    ReplyDelete
  54. You can apply for admission in IITs if you are having previous year Good GATE score current year. Then only requirement is the validity of that GATE score should be 2 year.

I have also took admission in 2007 when my 2007's GATE score was lower compared to 2006 score. My admission was based on GATE score of 2006 (higher score) not 2007 (lower)

  58. sir i am in 3rd yesr ME with integrated course(b.tech+M.tech dual degree).as a whole of 5 year degree. Is there any drawback if i cancel dual degree option and contine for only b.tech and go for gate.My second question is that if i continue for dual degree can i give gate exam and what is the benefit of giving gate exam after M.tech?

    ReplyDelete
  59. 1. Why do you want to cancel the Dual degree course? What will be the benefits you will get except wasting of time?
    2. After Dual degeree you can apply for job and GATE.
    3. GATE will help you to take admission in PhD if you want to and to get the preference in Job interview.

  60. Sir m pursing my graduation in mechanical engineering ...i m now in t.e n 2014 will be end of my engg career i need proper guidance wats better gate ..mba or a designing course of 6 mnths den a job

    1. All will untimely depend on your interest. For job, it is better to choose core company and which type of design course you are willing to do? I think that will not be of any value compared to GATE. You need to perform well in GATE and this will increase your value. If you are good at technical, go for job and do not have much interest in technical subjects, do MBA. Will you complete with other students who just passed B.Com or BBA or BCA in MBA? Or make your engg. career more better?
